The long grueling hours put into practicing, choreography, and memorization finally paid off. On Dec. 8, 2017, the Vocal Music Department, also known as the VMD, performed their Winter Concert for friends and family. Seven VMD groups, the Women’s and Men’s choruses, A Capella Choir, the Women’s and Men’s Barbershops, Gold Rush, and the Heights Singers, sang their hearts out. Alumni were even asked to ascend to the stage and perform with some of the groups!
Each group performed quite a variety of songs for their waiting audience that evening. The Women’s Chorus sang three songs, “Jubilate Deo,” “Be a Candle of Hope” and “The Bells.” The Men’s Chorus sang “Psallite Hodie!” and “O Bambino.” To finish off the first half of the evening, the A Cappella Choir performed “Il Bianco e Dolce Cigna,” “O Magnum Mysterium,” Erev Shel Shoshanim,” “Dashing Through the Snow,” “Still, Still, Still,” “Sleigh Ride” and, finally, “Hallelujah! (from Messiah).
To kick off the second half of the night, the Women’s Barbershop went on stage first with “Ding-A Ding-A Ding” as well as “Sentimental Journey.” Gold Rush, a smaller pop A Cappella group in their second official year of operation, performed “Here We Come a-Caroling” and “White Christmas.” The Men’s Barbershop followed suit with “We Need a Little Christmas,” “It’s Only a Paper Moon” and “Jingle Bells.” The Heights Singers went on after that with choreographed versions of “Almost Christmas,” “That’s Christmas to Me,” and last, but not least, “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).”
At the end of the night, the entire VMD came together for one final song, “Carol of the Bells.” Thanks to the hard work of Director Jesse Lang, piano accompanist Anne Wilson, the VMD, and Stage Crew, the night went smoothly. Each of the groups sang their best and the audience was not disappointed.
